Darpa
DARPA has awarded Fluential multiple grants as part of its TRANSTAC program to develop the next generation of speech-to-speech translation technology and to create specific applications in English-Arabic for use by U.S. service members in Iraq. With this funding, Fluential has advanced its underlying speech translation technology, so that specific speech translation applications can be developed for more complex interactions, with much higher accuracy, and with greater speed. These advances have also reduced the cost, as well as the amount of time, required to optimize new speech translation applications for both military and non-military customers.

The goal of DARPA's TRANSTAC program is to demonstrate capabilities to rapidly develop and field translation systems that enable speakers of different languages to communicate with each other in real-world tactical situations. The program has focused on languages of relevance to national security.

USAF
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is providing funding to create novel algorithms and development approaches that enable rapid building of new speech translation applications for new languages with much less speech data than is required by previous approaches.

AFRL is the Air Force's only organization wholly dedicated to leading the discovery, development, and integration of warfighting technologies for our air, space and cyberspace forces.

ARL
The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has awarded Fluential multiple grants to develop and demonstrate specific applications for speech translation systems. With these grants, Fluential has created applications for specific missions in Korean and Japanese.

ARL is the Army's corporate basic and applied research laboratory. Its mission is to provide innovative science, technology, and analysis to enable full-spectrum operations.

The Office of the Secretary of Defense has awarded Fluential multiple grants to pioneer a new type of technology to perform information extraction from speech signals. These projects have been highly successful and have already been integrated into Fluential's speech translation technology.

The Secretary of Defense, the principal defense policy advisor to the President, formulates defense policy and provides civilian leadership to the Department of Defense (DoD).

The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict (ASD/SOLIC) funded Fluential to develop the first ever bidirectional speech translation application in Arabic. Fluential successfully developed an application for force protection and deployed twenty units to Iraq. Evaluators in Iraq provided valuable feedback that has resulted in improvements to the user interface making our systems easier to use in the field.

ASD/SOLIC provides overall supervision of Special Operations (SO) and Low-intensity Conflict (LIC) activities of the DoD, including oversight of policy and resources. The Assistant Secretary is also the principal civilian advisor to the Secretary of Defense on SO/LIC matters.

The U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) funded Fluential to develop the first bidirectional speech translation system deployed by the U.S. military. This system was an English-Serbo Croatian system for mine-clearing operations. INSCOM also provided additional funding for the Iraqi Arabic system that was funded by ASD/SOLIC.

INSCOM is a major Army command that conducts dominant intelligence, security, and information operations for military commanders and national decision makers.

The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) has funded hardware improvements to make S-MINDS more useable for special operations, including the development of highly innovative, new wireless capabilities. With this funding, Fluential has developed the first full-duplex, 2-way, high-bandwidth wireless solution in the world for any industry. This technology makes it possible to use the speech translation system in the field with the computer staying in a Humvee or the service member's rucksack. It also enables the service member to keep a safe distance from the second-language speaker and communicate hands-free and eyes-free, while keeping both hands on their weapon if necessary.

USSOCOM leads, plans, synchronizes, and as directed, executes global operations against terror networks. The organization also trains, organizes, equips, and deploys combat-ready special operations forces to combatant commands.

Dli
The Defense Language Institute (DLI) is providing funding for Fluential to adapt its speech translation technology to create a new tool for training service members in learning new languages. Specifically, this new technology will provide role-play interaction enabling service members to practice their foreign-language skills, learn new dialects of a language, and acquire mission-specific vocabulary.

DLI provides foreign language education, training, evaluation, and sustainment for DoD personnel in order to ensure the success of the Defense Foreign Language Program and enhance the security of the Nation.

Dos
The Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. State Department provided funding to Fluential to adapt its speech translation technology for new language training tools to be used by diplomats learning a foreign language.

The mission of the U.S. State Department is to create a more secure, democratic, and prosperous world for the benefit of the American people and the international community. Within the State Department, the Foreign Service Institute is the Federal Government's primary training institution for officers and support personnel of the U.S. foreign affairs community, preparing American diplomats and other professionals to advance U.S. foreign affairs interests overseas and in Washington.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) awarded Fluential a prestigious multiple-year Advanced Technology Program (ATP) grant to develop and demonstrate technologies that enable accurate machine understanding of human languages by isolating statistically significant phrases and mapping equivalencies in their usage. This highly successful project provided Fluential with breakthrough technology that has been integrated into the company's speech translation systems.

The goal of ATP is to benefit the U.S. economy by cost-sharing research with industry to foster new, innovative technologies. The ATP invests in risky, challenging technologies that have the potential for a big pay off for the nation's economy. These technologies create opportunities for new, world-class products, services and industrial processes, benefiting not just the ATP participants, but other companies and industries and ultimately consumers and taxpayers as well. By reducing the early-stage R&D risks for individual companies, the ATP enables industry to pursue promising technologies which otherwise would be ignored or developed too slowly to compete in rapidly changing world markets.

Ns
The National Science Foundation has awarded Fluential multiple grants to create a new syntactic statistical machine translation engine that uses phrases, rather than words as the unit of translation. The goal of this ongoing research is to create technology capable of translating more complex interactions in broader domains with higher accuracy while reducing cost, time, and amount of data needed to build translation systems.

NSF is the U.S. federal government's only agency dedicated to the support of education and fundamental research in all scientific and engineering disciplines. Its mission is to ensure that the United States maintains leadership in scientific discovery and the development of new technologies.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have funded Fluential to evaluate the potential for its speech translation technology to improve the quality of care and patient safety for limited English proficient hospital patients. This ongoing research is being conducted in collaboration with one of the largest integrated health organizations in the United States with their Spanish- and Cantonese-speaking patients.

NIH is the nation's medical research agency, making important medical discoveries that improve health and save lives. It is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research.
